The sweet sounds of the past have always been a sought after but elusive promise. Many of today's hardware and software manufacturers seek to provide us with instruments that bring back that vintage sound in hopes of creating those special emotions captured in the classic recordings of days gone by.
Applied Acoustics Systems has pioneered this effort to create playable and convincing virtual instruments that blur the line between what is real and what is virtual. Their latest project embodies the best of what technology has to offer in the form of Lounge Lizard.

EARS AND SNOWFLAKES
Our fingerprints are like snowflakes, each one unique and individual. Take this same principle and apply it to your ears. We all have our very own hearing signature, the way we perceive and interpret the sounds around us. As musicians we spend a considerable amount of time performing, recording, mixing and working with our own sounds and possibly helping produce the sounds of others.

DIGITAL CRAFTSMEN
In days gone by musical instruments were produced by very gifted craftsmen. They would spend many hours, days and months shaping wood and other raw materials to creating priceless instruments that we still prize and treasure to this day.
While the times may have changed many of the principles remain the same. The medium is somewhat different though. Many of today's instruments are created from the raw material of ones and zeros. These new era craftsmen spend the same amount of time and dedication to turn this digital code into an instrument a musician can use to realize their inner musical ideas. Such are the team behind the latest version of Pianoteq.
For a little more introduction you can read my review of Pianoteq version 3 here. This review will be looking at some of the new features version 4 brings to this dynamic software instrument.

Solomon had it right when he said the following, "That which has been is now; and that which is to be has already been; and God requires that which is past." Ecclesiastes 3:15 (KJV).
In the days of such advanced digital technology we are finding more and more technology companies actually reaching for what has been in the past and bringing it to us in a new and exciting way. Such is the case with the latest effect plugin from Steven Slate Digital, Virtual Tape Machines.

BIG THINGS DO COME IN SMALL PACKAGES
Well once in a while I get surprised by a product. I do a lot of playing on the road using the iPad for a track playback device. At every venue it seems there is a different way to connect the iPad to the house soundsystem so at times you were not sure what you were going to have. On a recent concert the sound company had an interesting box on the piano and this was the beginning of my discovery of the LSP-1.

SURPRISES ARE GOOD
Once in a while I get some surprises in my email inbox and the other day was no exception. A company I had not heard of previously asked me to take a look and listen to their line of earphones. I am always wanting to try new products, especially listening devices so I accepted their invitation. A few days later a package arrived with not only one but three different earphone models. So let's get started.

There is definitely not a lack of devices to get your computer, laptop and now even iPhones and iPads connected to the world of audio around you. That being said it makes it all the more important to find the right piece of gear for the job at hand. PreSonus has been making interfaces for some time and since being introduced to them I am already finding they have done their homework.
