Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro

I wanted to take my journey to the next level by taking a look at what is called
"Dual Driver" in-ear phones. These provide two separate high quality drivers or speakers with one dedicated to low frequencies and the other to the mid and high frequencies.

The Super.fi 5 Pro (try saying that about five times real fast) is based on the design of the Super.fi 3. There is a slight difference in the size and this is to accommodate the larger low frequency driver.

The accessories are similar to what you get with the Super.fi 3 Studio's metal carrying case, several sizes of silicon eartips, a set of foam eartips, a stereo minplug to ¼ inch adapter, the audio attentuator and the all important cleaning tool.

The cable used on the Super.fi 5 pro seemed a little better to handle than the Super.fi 3. It was a nice braided cord encased in a clear plastic coating. I wanted to try using the metal case and I was able to store the accessories in the bottom half and the earphones in the top half (depending on which side you had facing up) and that seemed to work fine. There was a little issue in getting things straightened out after removing them from the case but not too bad.

Also the Super.fi 5 pro had the "memory wire" feature that allowed you to do a more custom fit of the in-ears once you had "rocked and rolled" them into your ears. This makes the comfort more secure as well as comfortable when wearing them for an extended period of time.

On the eartips themselves you need to spend some time and try the various sizes to get the best fit. Having a tight ear seal is critical in getting the most quality from your in-ears. It was funny that I actually used two different sizes of the silicon eartips. I used the larger one for my right ear and the mid sized tip for my left ear. This really made a difference in the secure fit, seal and sound.

I was pleasantly surprised by what I was hearing when I listened to my test songs. There was definitely some details that were not showing up in some of the other in-ears I had tested. The bass was low and tight, not boomy or muddy and the high end was just where it needed to be; bright and crisp without being too harsh.

Do two drivers make a difference? You better believe it. It was funny that a live recording I listened to had a lot of the crowd noise before the start of the concert and I could hear individual voices talking instead of just the general noise of the crowd that was fascinating. Being able to hear detail you had never heard before when listening so long to your music really adds to the importance of having a quality set of in-ears.

Having the classic Ultimate Ears design though meant having some of the in-ear stick out of your ear that at first seems a little awkward. The tradeoff though is that people may think you are the communications expert on a starship but you can just look at them and smile because they do not know what they are missing.
